Accident risks
Common Accident Risks in Minnesota
Minnesota winters bring snow, ice, and whiteout conditions that cause chain-reaction crashes on I-94, I-35W, I-35E, I-494, and I-694 around the Twin Cities. Rural highways such as US-169 and US-52 carry farm equipment and commercial trucks at highway speeds. Icy sidewalks and parking lots also make slip and fall injuries a common and serious problem from November through March.

Know your rights
Minnesota Personal Injury Laws You Should Know
Every state sets its own rules for injury claims. These are the Minnesota rules that most often affect what you can recover and when you must act.
Statute of limitations
Minnesota generally allows six years for negligence-based personal injury claims (Minn. Stat. § 541.05). Wrongful death claims must be filed within three years of death, and no later than six years from the act that caused it (§ 573.02).
Modified comparative negligence
Under Minn. Stat. § 604.01, you can recover as long as your fault is not greater than the fault of the party you are suing. Your damages are reduced by your share of fault.
No-fault PIP
Minnesota requires $40,000 in basic economic loss benefits: $20,000 for medical expenses and $20,000 for non-medical losses such as lost wages and replacement services.
Tort threshold
To sue an at-fault driver for pain and suffering, you generally need more than $4,000 in medical expenses, 60 days or more of disability, permanent injury, permanent disfigurement, or death (Minn. Stat. § 65B.51).
Minimum liability limits
$30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, and $10,000 for property damage, plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
Government claims
Claims against cities, counties, and the State generally require written notice within 180 days.
